README.DOC for LOGIN.EXE, PASSWD.EXE, and CNVTUNIX.EXE
----------------------------------------------------------
The three executables included in this archive comprise a complete UNIX
compatible, DES secure, and flexible password system for OS/2. Its intended
usage is as a replacement for the login.exe supplied with IBM's TCP/IP for
OS/2.
Each file is described briefly below:
LOGIN.EXE: the replacement for IBM's login.exe/loginunx.exe. It uses a
password file similar in format to that of a UNIX system. Passwords are
DES-encrypted. All login attempts can be logged, whether successful or
otherwise. Shells and default directories can be specified on a user-by-user
basis. After a correct login, the username is placed in the environment and
in a special file, and the desired shell is spawned or control is returned to
TelnetD.
PASSWD.EXE: a utility to create and manage the OS/2 password file. It can be
used to create new password entries as well as modify the data for current
entries.
CNVTUNIX.EXE: a utility to convert a UNIX-style passwd file to an OS/2-style
password file. It will strip unused UID and group fields and reformat the
shell and directory fields.
